Homemade Chicken Nuggets Recipe
Preparation Time:
- Prep Time: 20 minutes
- Cooking Time: 15 minutes
- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Servings: 4
Ingredients
For the Chicken Nuggets:
- 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (around 500g)
- 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika (for mild smokiness)
- ½ teaspoon chili powder (optional, for spice)
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano (optional, for extra flavor)
For the Breading:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup milk
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch or regular for a classic texture)
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for extra taste)
For Frying:
- 2 to 3 cups vegetable oil (sunflower, canola, or peanut oil)
For Serving:
- Tomato ketchup
- Mayonnaise or garlic aioli
- Honey mustard or barbecue sauce
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken
- Wash the chicken breasts thoroughly and pat them dry with a paper towel.
- Cut the chicken into bite-sized cubes (about 1-inch pieces) for easy eating.
- Place the chicken pieces in a bowl and season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, chili powder, and oregano. Mix well so that each piece is evenly coated. Let it rest for 10-15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
Step 2: Set Up the Breading Station
Prepare three separate bowls:
Bowl 1 – Flour Mixture:
- In a shallow dish, add 1 cup all-purpose flour and a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Mix well.
Bowl 2 – Egg Wash:
- In another bowl, crack 2 eggs, add ½ cup milk, and whisk until smooth.
Bowl 3 – Breadcrumbs:
- In a third bowl, add 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular) and ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (if using).
- Mix well for a crispy coating.
Step 3: Coat the Chicken
- Take a piece of seasoned chicken and dredge it in the flour mixture, making sure it is well coated. Shake off any excess.
- Dip the floured chicken into the egg wash, ensuring full coverage.
- Finally, coat it with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently so the coating sticks well.
- Repeat the process for all the chicken pieces and place them on a plate.
Step 4: Fry the Chicken Nuggets
- Heat the Oil: Pour 2-3 cups of vegetable oil into a deep frying pan or pot. Heat it over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, drop a small piece of breadcrumb into the oil—if it sizzles and rises to the top, the oil is ready.
- Fry in Batches: Add the coated chicken nuggets in small batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
- Cooking Time: Fry for 4-5 minutes, flipping occasionally until the nuggets turn golden brown and crispy.
- Drain Excess Oil: Remove the nuggets with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to soak up excess oil.
Step 5: Baking Option (Healthier Alternative)
If you prefer baked chicken nuggets instead of fried ones:
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
- Arrange the breaded nuggets in a single layer and spray or brush them lightly with oil.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping them halfway until golden and crispy.
Step 6: Serving the Nuggets
- Serve the crispy chicken nuggets hot and fresh with your favorite dips such as:
- Classic ketchup
- Creamy mayonnaise or garlic aioli
- Honey mustard sauce
- BBQ sauce
- Spicy sriracha mayo
